AI

AI agents now answer, book and buy for you. Here's what can go wrong

OpenAI and Dots logos above four colourful, fuzzy characters on a dark background

An AI agent carries out tasks for you: it reads your email, books the appointment and fills in the form, using the accounts you give it. Three big ones arrived this autumn: OpenAI’s Dots on 29 September, Google’s Gemini agent on 8 October, and Anthropic’s Claude Cowork. They’re good at jobs that repeat, and risky when nobody checks what they do.

  • A person should still approve anything that moves money or makes a promise.
  • Since 2 August 2026 the EU AI Act says an AI that talks with people must say it’s an AI, unless that’s obvious.

What an AI agent is

A chatbot answers questions. An agent works in your calendar, inbox, files or booking system, step by step, toward a goal you set.

At 21:30 a customer calls a hairdresser to book a cut. Nobody answers, so they book with the next salon on the list. An agent can take that call, book the slot and send a confirmation by text message.

The agents you can use now

AgentWhat it doesWho can use it now
Dots, OpenAI, 29 September 2026Keeps working online when your computer is off. Reads and answers email, adds meetings and buys things for you unless you say otherwise.ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium in selected countries. In the EEA (the EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), only the business plans.
Gemini agent, Google, 8 October 2026Gets its own Google Workspace account and email address, works toward goals you set and keeps a record of everything it did.A limited number of companies for now.
Claude Cowork, AnthropicWorks in the files and tools you choose and asks before it deletes anything.Paid Claude plans, from Claude Pro.

OpenAI says Dots works toward your goals "in the background with minimal oversight". That’s why the rules further down matter. Our comparison of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini shows how the models behind them differ.

Six jobs agents already do well

If you run a business, these are ready for an agent today:

JobWhat the agent doesWhat a person still does
Calls and chats after closing timeAnswers, books, takes the order or the messageCalls back when a person is needed and reads the summary
AppointmentsBooks, moves and cancels in your booking system and sends remindersSets the rules: which times, how long, with whom
New enquiriesReplies within minutes, asks what your salesperson would ask and books a meetingHolds the meeting and gives the price
The inboxSorts email, sends each one to the right person and writes draft repliesApproves replies that promise something
QuotesWrites a draft quote from the enquiry and your price listChecks the price and sends the quote
Invoices and receiptsReads them and enters them in your accounting systemApproves every payment

Say you’re a plumber. On Sunday evening a customer asks about a new water heater. The agent asks for photos and the address and drafts a quote from your price list, which you check and send on Monday. If water is leaking right now, it calls you.

What can go wrong

In July 2026, by OpenAI’s own account, agents it was testing for hacking skills escaped from a test that was meant to run offline and reached the servers of the AI company Hugging Face. OpenAI’s monitoring would have caught it more than a day earlier, VG reported, but it was switched off. Nobody independent has checked OpenAI’s account, Lotte Skolem of the think tank Langsikt told NRK.

An agent that answers your phone can reach far less: your calendar, your opening hours, your price list. Its risks are more ordinary:

  • It gives a wrong answer and sounds sure about it.
  • It shares information with the wrong person.
  • It does more than you meant, like sending an email or buying something.
  • Nobody notices, because nobody reads what it does.

Six rules before an agent acts for you

  1. The agent drafts, a person approves. Payments, refunds, quotes and anything that makes a promise go to a person first.
  2. Only the access it needs. An agent that books appointments gets your calendar, not your bank or your whole inbox.
  3. A record of everything, with alerts on, so you can see every answer and every action afterwards.
  4. Data stored in Europe. Choose a service that stores data in the EU or EEA, and sign a data processing agreement: the contract GDPR, the EU privacy law, requires when another company handles personal data for you.
  5. Say it’s an AI. Article 50 of the EU AI Act requires it from 2 August 2026, unless it’s obvious.
  6. A quick way to a person. Anyone can ask for a human, and the agent hands over the whole conversation.

How to try one safely

  1. Count what you miss. In last week’s call log and inbox, count the calls and messages that came after hours, and how many never got an answer.
  2. Pick one job, the one that costs you the most time or customers, and write down the 20 questions people ask most, with your answers.
  3. Set the limits: what the agent may do alone, and the one thing it must never do, such as give a price. Connect only the tools that job needs.
  4. Test it for two weeks while a person reads every answer. Then keep it, change the rules or stop.

How we set up an agent

When we set up an agent, we start the same way: one job, on real data, for one to two weeks, under GDPR and with the data kept in the EU or EEA where possible. Then there’s a clear yes or no, and a fixed price for the full version.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers

  • Claude Cowork comes with Claude Pro, at $17 a month billed yearly or $20 billed monthly. Google says its Gemini agent comes at no extra charge where Gemini Enterprise is available. An agent connected to your own phone line, booking system or accounting is a separate project with its own price.

  • Yes, on ChatGPT Business Premium or Enterprise. ChatGPT Pro doesn’t include it in the EEA, and on Enterprise an administrator must approve it first.

  • Banks are testing it. On 2 March 2026 Santander and Mastercard made what they call Europe’s first live payment by an AI agent, in a controlled test. For now, let the agent prepare payments and a person approve them.

  • OpenAI says the safeguards in Dots lower the risk but don’t remove it, Tek.no reports. Deleting a Dot doesn’t undo what it already did, and you can’t delete single memories, only the whole Dot.

  • In 2025, 20% of EU businesses with 10 or more employees used AI, according to Eurostat. In Norway the share reached 48% in 2026, according to Statistics Norway.
